Meet Sean Sutton

Sean is a passionate aquatic educator dedicated to advancing and sharing strategies that help prevent drownings and reveal the magic water has to offer. He began his journey teaching at his family’s swim school in Cupertino, CA, where he became a swim instructor at age 14. Throughout his career, Sean has worked with diverse students across multiple swim schools and aquatic programs. His background includes teaching group and private lessons, working with individuals training for military service, leading Deep End Fitness sessions, assistant coaching an adaptive synchronized swim team, and providing both mobile and stationary lessons through his company, Flomotion Aquatics, in Austin, TX.

Driven by the belief that the ability to remain calm is key to water survival, Sean’s mission is to innovate and share drowning prevention techniques that foster confidence, resilience, and a strong connection to the water. Over time, he has shifted from traditional stroke-based instruction to a unique teaching style that emphasizes dynamic movement and fine motor skill tasks. His approach centers on practical, real-world skills designed to empower students to stay relaxed and avoid panic in unexpected water situations.

Creating Underwater Problem Solvers

How can we empower students to remain calm and avoid panic in unexpected water situations? The key is teaching them how to slow down, quiet their minds, and focus on the task at hand.

During underwater activities, CO₂ naturally builds up in the body, triggering a mild stress response and the urge to breathe. By helping children recognize this sensation, we teach them to understand their body’s response. Through tasks and activities that require dynamic movements and fine motor skills, we guide them to manage their emotions, maintain composure, and think critically under pressure.

In this class, you’ll discover how to turn your students into “Underwater Problem Solvers.” Through fun activities like assembling or sorting objects, tying simple knots, and navigating underwater obstacles, children learn practical skills while overcoming challenges. I will also introduce a simple “breath-up” technique for kids, along with advice on which breathing habits to avoid.
